Daily Axioms: The Gravitational Pull of Pepsi: Scientific or Sham?

  • Mandy Bee · 10 months ago
From the moment I saw Pepsi's new logo, I hated it. Their previous logo had a nice symmetry, it was easy to look at and of course had brand recognition. Beyond this (hopefully) tongue-in-cheek reasoning behind updating their logo, I want to know why they felt the need to "update" what was definitely already working for them.

The new logo feels like it was made for an airline - the white shape inside looks like a wing or bird to me. It looks like someone threw this together using Illustrator in 2 minutes and decided not to think about it ever again.

The new logo repels me. Gravitational pull = fail. :P

Thanks for the comment Mandy. A lot have been saying things similar to you - the new Pepsi logo looks like a mashup of the logo for Korean Air (http://tinyurl.com/aq9qcy) and Obama's logo (http://tinyurl.com/c9jftw). I have to somewhat agree.

I've heard that the new logo is supposed to resemble a smiling face. That would make the white strip the teeth of the logo. If this is so, I'd be weary of creating a logo for a large corporation that was a somewhat creepy smiling face with no distinguishing (personable) characteristics. A bit too Ayn Rand for me.

Then again this piece claims that its inspiration was gravitational pull- so who knows where it really came from.
